Marco Polo in Mongol-ruled China
1271 – the seventeen year-old Marco Polo left for China.
1275 – in China, Marco Polo was recruited into the service of the Mongol ruler, Kubilai Khan (1251 – 1294).
1294 – Kubilai Khan died. Over the past century, the Mongol rulers had achieved many positive things.
1295 – Marco Polo returned to Italy. Soon after, during the Venice-Genoese War, he was captured and imprisoned.
1298 – while in prison, Marco Polo dictated his memoirs. He reported that it was ‘out of the generosity of the Great Khan’, that the inhabitants of the great city were fed. And Taoism and Buddhism, which were not taxed, were encouraged to spread their doctrine, – but Islam was not. However taxes were imposed on the peasants and other Chinese citizens to support the Buddhist Monasteries.
1368 – the Nationalist Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644) overthrew the Mongol Yuan Dynasty, and Mongol rule collapsed in China……read more in Volume Seven.
